Our Mission
ChinaDiscern is an independent publication dedicated to providing clear-eyed, evidence-based analysis of Chinese society. We believe that understanding China requires moving beyond both uncritical boosterism and reflexive pessimism. Our goal is to examine the data, listen to the people, and present the most honest picture we can.
What We Cover
Our analysis spans the issues that most directly affect the lives of ordinary Chinese citizens:
- Economy — GDP growth, consumer spending, employment, trade, and the gap between macroeconomic data and household reality
- Demographics — Marriage rates, birth rates, population aging, migration patterns, and the long-term implications of demographic change
- Housing — The property market, affordability, homeownership, and the intersection of housing with culture and finance
- Healthcare — Access, cost, insurance coverage, regional disparities, and the challenge of serving 1.4 billion people
- Society & Culture — Involution, lying flat, generational shifts, education, mental health, and the evolving values of Chinese youth
Our Approach
We aim for analytical rigor without academic jargon. Every claim we make is grounded in publicly available data from Chinese government statistics, international organizations, academic research, and on-the-ground reporting. Where data is uncertain or contested, we say so.
We are not affiliated with any government, political party, or corporate interest. Our only commitment is to accuracy and fairness.
